5 Ways to Cool Off This Summer and Beat the Florida Heat

    July 20, 2017

Whether it’s for the sizzling hot beach bodies outstretched on the warm beach sand or the scorching hot temperatures that drive the sweat down your back, summer in Florida is known to bring the heat! And while we remain excited about the former, the prospect of sky high temperatures should be a cause for pause.

Getting overheated can be dangerous, so you want to stay vigilant and watch out for any signs of heat stress. But prevention is always better than cure, right? We believe so too, and that’s why we share these tips to help you beat the heat and make the best out of your summer.

And no, these do not include sitting in an air conditioned room, because who wants to sit in a room all day in the middle of Florida summer when all the good stuff is happening outside?

    1. Prepare the Right Fabrics

The right fabrics and threads are the ones that afford you both fashion and function. This summer, going for lightweight cotton and linen clothing that breathe will allow you to go about your business freely. If you plan on working out, lose the sweat shirt and go for breathable athletic fabrics that will wick the moisture away, and consequently the heat, from your body.

    1. Drink Lots of Fluids

Especially water. Drink lots of it and keep from getting dehydrated. If you wait till your thirsty before you take a sip then you’re waiting too long. Slip a few cubes of ice into a double-walled stainless steel tumbler like a Hydro Flask® or a Yeti® for a cold drink that lasts throughout the day no matter how hot it gets.

    1. Don’t Forget Your Hat

Another piece of clothing you want to make your best friend during this period is a hat, or if you don’t mind the amused stares, an umbrella. A hat or an umbrella will keep the sun’s rays away from your body and keep you staying cooler for longer. Go for the wide brimmed type of hat, one with a weave that breathes and allows the air to circulate around you even as it keeps the sun’s rays out.

    1. Use a Cooling Towel

Cooling towels are great if you plan on doing some physical exercise outside during the heat. You can either buy one or make one yourself with a scarf, sarong, or a bandana. You just soak any of these in water and wrap around your neck or forehead. The evaporating water is sure to keep your body temperature steady.

      • Get Wet

It is summer in Florida…why aren’t you yet wet?! Chill out in the pool, or in the ocean, and have fun while you beat the heat. If you’re not keen on getting your feet wet, you can still harness the cooling effect of water by carrying a spray water bottle and treating yourself to a few sprays every now and then. Concentrate on your pulse points, like your neck and the back of your wrists, and enjoy the cooling effect as the water evaporates.
